National Awardees for Science Popularisation

1991 Shri D.R.Baluragi
Reader in Physics,
L.V.D College,
Raichur, Karnataka


Born onJuly 7, 1943, Shri D.R.Baluragi is presently Reader(Physics) in the L.V.D.College, Raichur, Karnataka. He did his M.Sc.(Physics) in 1968 and has served as a teacher in the S.S.High School, Bilgi (1964-1966); as Lec- turer(Physics) in the L.V.D.College, Raichur (1968-80) and also as Assistant Registrar at the Gulbarga University, Gulbarga (1980-1983).

Shri Baluragi was also the Director of the Belgaum Vijnana Kendra(BVK), Belgaurn-a unit of the Karnataka RaJ'ya Vijnana Parishad, and an insti- tution engaged in science popularisa- tion activities. During his tenure at BVK, he contributed in a major way to the popularisation of science among people in general and children in par- ticular through development of a large number of low/no cost science learning aids/kits/experiments. He is a prolific popular science writer in Kannada and has authored 8 books, and nearly 100 popular science articles. He has also developed wall-charts on different sci- intific themes for children, done AIR programmes on science, and served on the Editorial Board of a popular sci- ence magazine for children 'Bala Vijnana'in Kannada.
